RealtyTimes recently ran a piece about what buyers are looking for in the homes they purchase. This should be of great interest to any seller in today’s market.
The current trend is that buyers are looking for homes that are approximately 2,000 square feet. Unfortunately, about half of homes in the U.S. are 40 years old or more, and do not have the types of amenities that today’s buyers want.
Of those houses currently on the market, only 1/3 have 2,000 or more square feet. Many existing houses are even under 1,200 feet.
So what should you do if you fall in the category of having these smaller houses? The old saying “location, location, location” comes into play here, and it can trump other considerations such as size. Buyers may be willing to sacrifice size for location.
You may also highlight to the buyer what is possible for the house. In other words, if you have previously considered remodeling ideas of have gotten quotes, share these with the buyer so that they may see your vision.
You should also remove any furniture that does not complement the house, and help minimize clutter to highlight the space that is available.
